Close encounters X 2

I left my campsite in Hewlett, Wyomingand took a relatively short drive to Devils Tower National Monument. One of the most memorable movies of my childhood was “ Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and I wanted to see this site in person. It is so unique. I’ll provide a few pics. you’ll have to look closely and you’ll see rock climbers. There were four or five of them there today. I took about 150 photos so I’ll do my best to pick a decent shot for you. Once again, the landscape is beautiful around here.

Then, on my way to Billings, where I am currently camped out, I swung by the Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument. The history of Custer’s last stand is well documented, but seeing it in person is quite an experience. The hills are quite steep and into a valley and then of course there is the Little Bighorn river, which is its namesake. You can envision based on what you read or hear during the narration what the soldiers and Indians must have encountered.

They have narration QR codes and plaques to read. The battlefield area is actually about 4 1/2 miles long.

I found it interesting in a number of ways. The first being that this was a national cemetery taking veterans up until it was filled in 1978. It was known as the Arlington of the west. Additionally, they put gravestones throughout the fields where they found the bones of the fallen soldiers at the battlefield and then moved them and put the headstones all in one area. that’s it for tonight. I hope everyone survived the rain! Keep your fingers crossed for me tonight after last night‘s mess! Lol.

Lush land and creek near Devils Tower entrance
One of about 1000 pictures I took walking around the circumference of the tower on the trail
This side of the tower makes it look tall and narrow
The windows crack on Devil‘s Tower
I think there’s two rock climbers in there somewhere

Some of the memorial is on private land and I happen to see one of their horses in the field and thought it looked nice!

  1. Wow! It’s not just in the movies! Great pics. It’s amazing how you get these pictures without any other people in them. I expected crowds. It looks like you’re the only one there. See you soon!
