East Side Story

The main road which cuts across Glacier National Park is known as “Going to the Sun” and it helps connect the east side with the west side of the park. Due to snowpack on the road, you can’t drive straight through the park yet, so we had to drive around to the East side today after visiting the West side yesterday.

Today was in the 80s as it was yesterday. It was a long drive to the East side but well worth it. Difficult to believe after what we saw yesterday, but we felt today was the most picturesque of all!

We took advise provided by a ranger yesterday, and went all the way to “Many Glacier” which had an old but ever expanding lodge nestled in the snow covered mountains, a beautiful lake, and a river. We then worked our way back to several well known spots in the park such as Jackson Glacier Overlook, St. Mary’s, and then took a short hike near Two Medicine. It was a long day, but beautiful.

We would recommend coming to the park this time of year as in a couple of weeks it will be busy. There is a steady stream of people, but not bad, and the weather is warm.

We noted an information kiosk that asked “Is the park false advertising?” Climate change has wreaked havoc on the Glaciers. There were approximately 115 glaciers about 100 years ago when they started the park and visitors began flocking here. By the year I was born, 1966, there were about 35 Glaciers and there is 26 as of 2019.

Enjoy the pics. June heads back tomorrow and I will be minimizing my blog posts as I will also be heading home. I’ve driven 3300 miles and accomplished a lot in just under 3 weeks. Thanks for hanging with me!

  1. glad to see you made it to Many Glacier. Reminds me of a Swiss hotel. Definitely worth seeing both sides of the park. We did lots of hiking there and a white water raft Trip
